Technology has changed — childhood essentials have not.

Raising kids in the digital age is tricky. We need to introduce tech slowly, in age-appropriate and intentional ways, and teach healthy habits. Time on screens can’t be at the expense of what matters most: childhood essentials like sleep, in-person relationships, hands-on play and learning, and time outdoors. Explore our resources to implement the guardrails and guidance needed to keep digital tech in check!

Healthy Tech Use Matters

Tech is here to stay, bringing upsides and downsides to thoughtfully navigate as individuals and as communities. Why does this matter? Because how children use digital tech affects their health and wellbeing:

Digital technology is sticky and designed to get and keep our attention. Most apps are made to earn profits for companies, not support healthy human development.

Young people’s brains are developing until age 25 and brain development is impacted by how kids spend their time, both online and offline.

Screen time can displace activities that are essential to healthy human development - like sleeping, moving your body, and feeling connected to family and friends.

There’s a “right time, right place” for tech use. But those lines have been blurred. So our hope is to cultivate communities where:

  • Thriving young people use their time well online and offline, know when and how to unplug, and engage in meaningful activities and relationships

  • Key adult stakeholders think critically about how, when, and where tech is used

To this end, we support parents, educators, and community leaders with education, consulting, and collective action.
