Our kids learn about using tech devices from what we tell them AND from watching how we use ours. In this virtual conversation, we'll explore what it really means to model healthy tech habits at home, from putting phones away during important family time (like during dinner) to talking openly about our own digital struggles. This isn't about guilt, perfection or shame - it’s about being honest that grown-ups are struggling with tech misuse too. When we make small, honest shifts that make a real difference, our kids learn from that, too. Whether you're just starting to think about this with elementary aged kids or are already deep in the struggle with your teen, we hope you’ll join us.
In this presentation we’ll cover:
- How our tech use impacts youth at different ages. Kids absorb tech habits by watching us, often more than by what we say.
- Common blind spots. Parents often don't realize how tech habits like phone/watch checking during family time, multitasking, or scrolling late into the night send a message.
- The small shifts that can make a big difference. We offer practical, low-pressure habit changes that work. No perfection required!
- How to talk to kids about navigating tech. Having honest conversations about your own tech habits and struggles, including when you slip-up is key to creating tech habits at home that balance tech use and in-real-life essentials.
- Building your digital ecosystem at home.
- Creating shared norms and expectations in community. Includes an intro to Kids IRL.
